Roger’s Thesaurus

Some poems

Roger’s Thesaurus

In order to grow, expand, widen
his lexicological corpus,
Roger bought, acquired, purchased
a synonymopedia, a thesaurus.

Soon, presently, without delay,
he no longer ran out of things to say,
speak, utter, express, articulate,
give voice to, pronounce, communicate.

This was all very well, fine, great,
wonderful, super, terrific
but his friends, mates, pals found him
boring, tedious, dull, soporific.

So let this be a warning,
an omen, a sign, a premonition,
it’s all very well to show learning,
education, knowledge, erudition,

but here’s a top tip, a hint,
a suggestion, some advice,
don’t ever let it stop you
from being concise

.

ss

brief, short, clear, pithy,
succinct, compendious, to the point,
compact, snappy, laconic.

..

.

Breviloquent.

Hello Brian B. I edit a small A5 magazine for Aughton & Ormskirk U3A. I would love to print this poem on our ‘Creative Writer group’ page; or just in the magazine itself. Would I have permission to do this?

    Kind regards

    Bill Evans, Ormskirk, UK

    Roger’s tale is a witty, self-aware caution:
**Expanding your lexicon? Beware verbosity’s snare.**
The poem *shows* excess (synonyms piling high)
then *practices* brevity with its sharp, final sigh:
    **”Breviloquent.”**

A lesson in style, not just wordplay —
true eloquence often means knowing *what not to say.* wonderful poem 🤝

Don’t have to be a sleuth

    To find ample proof

     A well worn trampled truth

    That to besmirch

    Not be kind

    On a pedant’s perch

    Scorn & be aloof

    Is quite simply uncouth

    Snooty snotty sniffy

In a jiffy drives me potty

    Those getting iffy

    You’ve gotta be pithy

    Must be dotty

    Semantic severity

    Temerity to stifle

    Getting a trifle squiffy

    Like a lush

    Quaffing & scoffing

    A lexicon so plush

    Brevity don’t mean levity

    Just let it gush

    It’s not your cortex

    So why try to vex

    With a supercilious hex

    Any wannabe thesaurus rex

    Must be told

    Brian my old fruit

With a lingo bingo to loot

    Don’t scold

    Let folks have a hoot

    Without pokes enjoy a toot

    Take the scenic route

Is there a word more absurd

    Less elegant…redolent or benevolent

    Than counter breviloquent

    So just hush

    You should blush

    It’s our duty

    To enjoy the booty

    Feeling flush

    Well what’s the rush

No need to be a bore

    No one’s keeping score

    Sometimes with rhymes

    More is well more
