Poem for anyone going back to work today

Selected poems

New Year Office Chitchat

How was your Christmas?
you ask

and I think of
the bloodstained rug

and the silent scraping
of the spade

in the garden
at midnight

and the wash wash
washing of my hands

and the dreams,
those endless dreams

which haunt
the night-time

and smudge
their thumbprints

on the day
to come

and I reply
Super, thanks. Yours?

Happy New Year, Brian. Hope you like this:

    The turkey’s in the oven

The cat is in the tree

    You’ve opened all you presents

    And acted graciously

The sprouts are peeled and cooking

    Prosecco’s flowing free

It’s Christmas and the time has come

    To kill the family.

I’m snowed in with my friend Gillian up in Scotland at present. It makes a change from the dreichness of Hertford in January. Take care. Stay well.

    Chris House
