Books

My books should be available through your local bookshop or any online store of your choosing. I’ve included links to bookshop.org. here, which may or may not be of some use to you.

A Poem for Every Question

Well, not every question. That would take ages to write and be a costly enterprise for a publisher. But there are poems for some questions eg Are unicorns real?; Why does thunder rumble? ; and Can it rain fish? It’s been written for children allegedly, and illustrated by the phenomenally talented Joe Berger. It’s out in the UK in September.

You Took the Last Bus Home

Where it all began. Not on the last bus, that is. I mean that these are my earliest poems, which first appeared on Twitter. As such, a lot of them are quite short. It features the poignant poem about Frisbee, and the one about not liking the Daily Mail very much. I like to think that my writing has become more sophisticated since these poems but I suspect I’m only fooling myself. Now available in a funky new edition.

Days Like These

366 poems in one book. That’s pretty much a poem for every day of the year if it’s a leap year. Each poem is inspired by an event associated with that day – from the invention of television to World Bee Day; from Ada Lovelace Day to the appearance of the first Barbie; from the death of Agatha Christie to the beheading of Charles I. Available in a convenient book format.

And So This is Christmas

Does what is says on the tin. If the tin was made of paper, that is, because this is a book. And so this is a bunch of Christmas poems; as such, an unlikely birthday gift for your nephew’s birthday in the middle of July. You could always get him a book token, though, so he can buy it in December when everything gets a little more festive. Just published.

Alexa, what is there to know about love?

Good question. No idea myself. Although there are plenty of poems about the subject in this one. Don’t worry if that sounds awful; they’re mainly about unrequited love or love going wrong in some way, so nothing too soppy. It’s got the caveman poem in it and that serenity prayer one. Oh, and the one about you being there when I get home (which is a bit soppy, tbh).

Diary of a Somebody

This one is different to the others because it’s a novel. It does have about 120 poems woven through it, through. The diary is that of a character called Brian Bilston (no relation), who is something of a loser (no resemblance). It contains the poem about mixing your metaphors and the modern art one, too. Somehow this book got shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award.

50 Ways to Score a Goal

A book of poems about football (or, if you’re from the United States, ‘football’). I wrote this for kids but apparently some grown ups like it, too. If you don’t like poetry or football then this probably isn’t the book for you.

Let Sleeping Cats Lie

A book of poems about pets (dogs, cats, goldfish, chinchillas, guinea pigs, snakes, budgies, rabbits, blue whales etc). It’s aimed squarely at children and people who used to be children.

Refugees

This is my ‘forwardy-backwardy’ poem about refugees made into a beautifully illustrated book for children, thanks to the artist Jose Sanabria. Now out in a lovely new hardback gift book edition.
